Google – Chrome – Settings – Memory Saver mode

Background

Any time I read an article on how I can make my Google Chrome browsing experience a bit more efficient, I am ears.

Google’s Chrome Announcement

Here is how Mark Chang, a Group Product Manager in the Chrome’s group, puts it:-

New Chrome features to save battery and make browsing smoother

Link

From the beginning, we designed Chrome for speed. But performance is more than just delivering a fast browsing experience.

Today, we’re announcing Chrome will now be optimized for your device’s battery and system memory.

With the latest release of Chrome on desktop, we’re introducing two new performance settings so Chrome uses up to 40% and 10GB less memory to keep your tabs running smoothly, and extend your battery when it’s running low.

We’ll be rolling out both Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes over the next several weeks globally for Windows, macOS and ChromeOS.

Have a bunch of tabs open in Chrome that you plan to come back to later?

Memory Saver mode frees up memory from tabs you aren’t currently using so the active websites you’re browsing have the smoothest possible experience.

Chrome – Setting – Memory Saver mode

What is Google’s Chrome “memory saver mode”?

Google’s memory saver mode allows the browser to identify tabs that are currently not in use.

Resources that are allocated in memory by those un-used tabs are cached to disk.

Upon successfully storing away the resources, the saved off resources are discarded from memory.

In essence, the tabs are still present, but they no longer hold on to as much valuable memory as they once did.

Introduction

Google is being very careful in rolling out Chrome’s Memory Saver functionality.

Google’s features are usually rolled out through its experimental delivery features initially.

Based on user acceptance and feedback, features are increasingly rolled out.

Such is the case here as well.

Our first ask is “has Google chosen us a receipient of its performance improvement tooling“?

Outline

Let us determine whether we have been availed the performance tooling?

  1. Access Google’s Chrome Settings
  2. Is the Performance Option availed?

Summary

This is yet one of those times where my documentation is a lot more work, than the actual doing.

So please go do the work.

If I had known ahead of time, I would have avoided wasting so much ink and time.
