Fratrice and Hearing from God

Phoenix, Arizona

It is with sadness that I read the account of the young man that took the life of his wife and two daughters over the weekend.

He let the third live as she reminds him more of himself than the older two; whose ways were more reminiscent of his wife.

Abrahamic Religion

Interestingly enough killing one own’s family member is the first account of murder accounted for in Abrahamic religion.

Documented in Wikipedia :-
Link

The Abrahamic religions recognizes the biblical account of Cain and Abel, this fratricide was the first type of murder to be committed.

In the mythology of ancient Rome, the city is founded as the result of a fratricide, when the twins Romulus and Remus quarrel over who has the favor of the gods and over each other’s plans to build Rome, and Romulus becomes Rome’s first king and namesake after killing his brother.

Hearing from God

He told detectives during an interview that he believed “in God’s eyes it was all right for him to deal with someone in this manner who had been involved in adultery or an extramarital affair,” Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

Better Job

I think within the faith community we have to do a far better job of separating physiological self from God.

Lord is patient ( 2nd Peter 3:9 )

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Lord Longs to be Gracious

Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you;
( Isaiah 30:18 )

The NIV says that he is more than gracious. He longs for it.
He rises up to extend graciousness.

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for him!

NKJV talks about him waiting to ensure graciousness….

Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you;
And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you.

Brenton Septuagint Translation admonishes to stay upon him :-

And the Lord will again wait, that he may pity you, and will therefore be exalted that he may have mercy upon you: because the Lord your God is a judge: blessed are they that stay themselves upon him.

Waitingness

Ezekiah

Then I came to them of the captivity at Telabib, that dwelt by the river of Chebar, and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.
( Ezekiel 3:15 )

Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
( Ezekiel 3:19 )

Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
( Ezekiel 3:20 )

Then the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spake with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself within thine house.
( Ezekiel 3:24 )

Jeremiah

Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.
( Jeremiah 42:4 )

And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.
( Jeremiah 42:7 )

And said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him;
( Jeremiah 42:9 )

If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
( Jeremiah 42:10 )

Word Management

I really like the way Pastor Paul handles our title verse, Isaiah 55:11.

I am not sure how Judaism exegesis it.

But, I think missionaries might handle it with and within a bit of self.

Always placing ourselves in the message.

Pastor Paul LeBoutillier

Pastor’s Paul main point is that this is God speaking in the first person.

It is his word and he is the one doing the doing.

Invitation to the Needy

…For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat,

so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.

My quick take

Isaiah 55:10

  1. We often forget it is an invitation to the needy
  2. Heaven
    • Rain and Snow come from heaven
  3. Earth
    • Watering the earth
    • Making it bud and sprout
    • Seed to sow
    • Food to eat

Isaiah 55:11

  1. My
    • My word
    • My mouth
  2. Me
    • Me empty
  3. I
    • I please
    • I send

My, Me, and I.

It seems to be all about God.

“from the presence of the serpent to her place in the wilderness” – Revelations 12:14

Scriptures

  1. But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle to fly from the presence of the serpent to her place in the wilderness, where she was nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.

Ellicott’s Commentary

  1. Prosecution
    • The woman is persecuted and driven into the wilderness: yet it is with the eagle wings given her by her Lord that she flies; the serpent drives her into the wilderness: yet it is in the wilderness that her place is prepared by God.
    • The way that seems hard is the way that is most blest.
    • The opposition of the dragon brings her blessings that she never would have received except in persecution; neither the eagle power nor the heavenly sustenance had been hers without the serpent’s hate.
    • Thus is the trial of faith precious in bringing us to know the priceless blessings of heavenly help and heavenly food.
  2. Eagle’s Wings
    • She is given eagle’s wings. God had spoken of the deliverance of Israel under a similar emblem, “Ye have seen . . . how I bare you on eagles’ wings and brought you unto myself”
    • There is a difference as well as a resemblance in the emblem here. In Exodus God is said to have borne Israel on eagles’ wings: here the wings are given to the woman. The strength of the earlier dispensation is a strength often used for, rather than in, the people of God; the strength of the latter is a strength in them: “They mount up with wings as eagles” ( Isaiah 40:31 ).
  3. Wilderness
    • The place is not a chance spot: it is prepared of God; it is in the wilderness, but still it is the place God prepared for her. It is always a delight to faith to mark how the ordering of God works in and through the wilfulness and wickedness of the enemy: the Son of man goeth, as it was written, though there is a “woe” against the man by whom He is betrayed. The wicked one can never drive us from God’s place, but only to it, unless we are enemies to ourselves. She is nourished in the wilderness.

God’s Calling ( Old and New Testament )

Background

I wanted to journal a bit on people of God’s calling.

Bible

  1. Moses
    • Exodus
      • Signs for Moses
        • Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” ( Exodus 4:10 )
        • The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-12 )
        • But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-13 )
        • Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.
          ( Exodus 4:11-14 )
        • You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do. ( Exodus 4:15 )
        • Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites,  and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, and they believed.
And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
        • The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go out of his land.…
          ( Exodus 7:1-2 )
      • The Ten Commandments
        • 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”

20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

  2. Isaiah
    • Isaiah
      • Isaiah 6
        • Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts
        • And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
  3. Ezekiel
    • Ezekiel
      • Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet
        • He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.” As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.
        • He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.  The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’
        • And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
        • And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.
        • You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.
        • But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you.”
  4. Daniel
    • Daniel
      • Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
        • 20 “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;wisdom and power are his.
          21 He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
          and knowledge to the discerning.
          22 He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
          and light dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you
          ( Daniel 2:21-23 )
  5. Amos
    • Amos
      • Then Amaziah said to Amos,“Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.

But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Now then, hear the word of the Lord.

  6. Gideon
    • Judges
      • The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?
        ( Judges 6:17-18 )
      • Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that it is You speaking with me. Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my gift and set it before You.
And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
        ( Judges 6:17-18 )
      • When Gideon realized that it was the Angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face!”But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”
        ( Judges 6:22-23 )

      • The Road to Damascus
        • He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?
Who are You, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” He replied.…
          ( Acts 9:4-5 )
        • Paul’s Testimony to Agrippa
…About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ ‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied.…

        ( Revelations 22:9 )
      • I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of Davidand the bright and morning star.
        ( Revelations 22:16 )

Jesus – “Consider carefully how you listen”

Background

The Jesus we meet in the bible is a man who admonishes us to listen carefully.

Listen Carefully

  1. The Lesson of the Lamp
…For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be known and illuminated.  Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” ( Luke 8:17-18 )
  2. The Lesson of the Lamp
…He went on to say, “Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and even more will be added to you. For whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” Jesus also said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed on the ground.… ( Mark 4:24-26 )
  3. The Purpose of Jesus’ Parables
…He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’…
    ( Matthew 13:11-13 )
  4. John  12
    • Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.  ( John 12:35 )
    • While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.  ( John 12:36 )
    • That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?  ( John 12:38 )
    • Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,  ( John 12:39 )
    • He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.  ( John 12:40 )
  5. “‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving’.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
    ( Isaiah 6:9-10 )

Guilt in God’s eyes

  1. The Murmuring of Miriam and Aaron
    • Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushite woman);( Numbers 12:1 )
    • He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream.
      Numbers 12:6 )
    • I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you unafraid to speak against My servant Moses?
      Numbers 12:8 )
  2. Job’s Final Appeal
…If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s ruin, or exulted when evil befell him— I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking for his life with a curse— if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’—…
    Job 31:29-31 )
  3. Abraham, Sarah, and Abimelech
    • But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. ( Gen. 20:3)
    • But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? ( Gen. 20:4 )
    • Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. ( Gen. 20:5 )
    • And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. ( Gen. 20:6 )
    • And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.  ( Gen. 20:11 )
    • And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.  ( Gen. 20:13 )
    • And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes ( Gen. 20:16 )

Spiritual Covering

Senses

There are quite a few senses involved in Spiritual covering.

Inclusive are seeing with our eyes, hearing with our ears, understanding with our hearts,  and turning; in essence repenting.

And, God ultimately stepping in to heal us.

Trees Planted Along A River

Background

Our pastor was able to get together a few of us to visit our local Jail on Tuesday evening.

It was a very good service with hymn singing and a pastoral word from him.

Though only six of us went from our Church, but as other churches were invited and stayed behind for the entirety of our time, we were received in the fullness of he who gathered and sent his Church.
