I am catching up on Francis Chan’s message during the recent “Altar Conference” in Fresno, California.

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

Cup of Cold Water

Background

I tuned in to a pastor the other day.

He tried to explain his position through scripture.

 

Cup of Cold Water

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
( Matthew 10:42 )

Indeed, if anyone gives you even a cup of water because you bear the name of Christ, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
( Mark 9:41 )

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will repay the lender.
( Proverbs 19:17 )

Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.
( Ecclesiastes 11:1 )

For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
( Hebrews 6:10 )

It is a Shame

It is a shame that we start off with a position and look for scripture to back it up.

Thanks goodness, Jesus never started with a position and defended it through scripture legalism.

 

Personal To me

May be it is just me.

But, there are some positions that are not worth looking for scripture to defend.

Many have been led astray in that endeavor.

Background

There is a video I placed on YouTube and someone placed a comment that reads :-

Classic example of someone allegorizing every text that they happen to use in a sermon…. that’s not how the Bible was written. Big problem here

My Quick Take

Personally it hurts me that whenever someone tries to help others, those more learned,  see to jump in and critique that person without doing the following.

Points

  1. Specifics
    • Narrowly pinpointing what they have an offense with
    • Specifically help and say how they can do better
  2. Submit
    • Submit to Leadership
      • We all have to be consecrated
      • And, be under some kind of leadership
  3. Struggle
    • Struggle with things, especially when we feel the Spirit is saying otherwise
      • Be minimal, so to speak, and not be flippant.
        Say what the Spirit Said and say “No more, no Less
  4. Seek
    • Seek each other out
    • And, advice in private
    • Modern era through social media provides various ways to seek each other out.  And in the interest of time, be very specific as to where we think the other person might have erred
  5. Understand we are called to various demographics
    • What appeals to demographics is not always intersected
    • Why will God need me, when the other says everything the way I would have said it
    • It is one thing to speak in error
    • Yet another to appeal to various senses and culture
  6. Work Harder
    • I will say work harder, if you are so offended by what someone is teaching
    • Provide contrasting materials and view points
      • So that others can hear
      • And, the person who is wrong can be convicted

Conclusion

We claim we are speaking for God here.  And, not for ourselves.

If we want to speak for ourselves, there are plenty of materials and videos to speak on.

Do not exceed what is written ( 1st Corinthians 4:6 )

Reading

Let us read into the pretext a bit.

Paul is making a point of saying the following :-

  1. Uniformity in teaching is paramount
  2. What we hear and how we judge those words should reflect the rigor and essentials of the read and preached word
  3. Baptism is unto Jesus and not unto the preacher/teacher
  4. Trying to play the number game via baptismal should likely not be a motivation

2:42-47 In these verses we have the history of the truly primitive church, of the first days of it; its state of infancy indeed, but, like that, the state of its greatest innocence. They kept close to holy ordinances, and abounded in piety and devotion; for Christianity, when admitted in the power of it, will dispose the soul to communion with God in all those ways wherein he has appointed us to meet him, and has promised to meet us. The greatness of the event raised them above the world, and the Holy Ghost filled them with such love, as made every one to be to another as to himself, and so made all things common, not by destroying property, but doing away selfishness, and causing charity. And God who moved them to it, knew that they were quickly to be driven from their possessions in Judea. The Lord, from day to day, inclined the hearts of more to embrace the gospel; not merely professors, but such as were actually brought into a state of acceptance with God, being made partakers of regenerating grace. Those whom God has designed for eternal salvation, shall be effectually brought to Christ, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of his glory.

Everything that can be shaken / 2018-Dec

Train Ride

As I came home this evening,  got on the wrong train. I intentionally did so as I did not want to wait around 10 minutes for my train.

Missed my jump off.  And, got off on the next one.

Switched directions and was good.

A young man was talking to himself and in between played his music a bit loud.

Made sure not to look in his direction.

And, doubly made sure “No eye contact”.

Finally, eye contact was forced as he intentionally bumped into me on his way to the “Standing Room” on the Train Bus.

The eye contact was affectionate and affirming. The way things are supposed to be.

He made ruckus with a few people.  Stared into an older man and threatened to beat him, if he hears anything.

As he got off the train, he spoke of looking forward to the day we get to see him on TV.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Takes me back to Thanksgiving dinner at my big brother’s home. Made friends with a man visiting from a foreign country.

He told me how bad things are in his country of origin.  A made man, yet he was scared about forthcoming elections. He deployed all the corruption and said that there will be wide unrest if things don’t get better.

I asked him if faith, specifically the religion we share can help.

He replied NO, and continued that he does not think so; the problems are simply too big.

“A lot of what’s going on has been a large group of people frightened by the changing face of the nation,” Springsteen told Esquire magazine in a separate interview. “There seems to be an awful lot of fear.”

The founding fathers were pretty good at confronting their fears and the fears of the country. And it’s the old cliché where geniuses built the system so an idiot could run it. We are completely testing that theory at this very moment. I do believe we’ll survive. But I don’t know if I see a unifying figure on the horizon. That worries me.”

I don’t know if there is a way to really bring those jobs back and I think that’s what’s causing so much anxiety to so many Americans,” he said.

Springsteen talked his father’s experience to illustrate what he understood as reason for the  frustrations of voters.

“My father worked as a 16-year-old floor boy in the rug mill, then went off to war,” Springsteen told the Times. “When he came home, they shut the rug mill down, and he went to work on the Ford Motor plant line in New Brunswick. He worked in the Nescafé plant in Freehold. Worked in the plastics factory in town, he was a truck driver, a bus driver, drove a taxi.”

“I don’t know precisely what I’m going to do this time, but I tend to think the more you make yourself available, perhaps the less weight your word carries,” he said.
