Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia ( Corinth ), the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.

Acts 19:1-7

Link

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples

and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied

Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.

On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

There were about twelve men in all.

Scripture

Acts 22:6-21

Link

  1. 6 “About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’
  2. 8 “‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.
  3. “ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. 9 My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.
  4. 10 “‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked.
  5. ” ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’ 11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.
  6. 12 “A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.
  7. 14 “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.
  8. 17 “When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’
  9. 19 “‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’
  10. 21 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”

The Bus Lady, That is just the way that I am

Wet

Monday evening turned wet on us.

And, as always I was without my umbrella.

Made it on the train and got off at my stop.

Only a bus ride stood between me and home.

But, missed the previous by 10 minutes.

The next one was 50 minutes away.

Holding still is not me and so walked to a waiting bus.

The Bus Conductor was not manning the bus.

So got on and waited for her.

Bus Lady

A few later someone asked me where I was going and I gladly replied.

She said it was good and that we will be leaving shortly.

It was only a small smoke break and we left shortly thereafter.

She did not even ask me to pay.

She asked if I had to walk upon getting off her bus, and I said Yes I do.

She said you can have the umbrella sitting on the stand between she and her passengers.

Continued that someone left it, forget it.

You can use it

I looked at her and wondered, are you kidding me.

Knowing she was not not going to drive that bus home and eventually she will need an umbrella too.

But, she replied she is good.

And, that giving is just the way she is.

SMH

It is my SMH moment.

One of my best friends came to visit about a year and half ago.

I had made an appointment, but I decided I was not going to keep it.

As fate will have it, his GPS system took him to the city square and I ended up making that appointment nonetheless.

He told me, that appointment I had made was not really for my benefit, but for his.

We ended up spending the whole day on that one appointment.

His Words

His words has stayed with me.

The umbrella was not for my benefit, but for her benefit.

Through the evening she will likely offer others that same umbrella.

Eventually there will be someone that really needs it.

Pray

As I got off the bus, I said I will pray for you.

And, that has an expectant mother, she should wait with conviction on a promise.

Bible Verses

NT

  1. In Pisidian Antioch ( Acts 13:15 ) ( Link )
    • After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue leaders sent word to them: “Brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, please speak.”
  2. Living Sacrifices ( Romans 12:8 ) ( Link )
    • …if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;
    • if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is giving, let him give generously; if it is leading, let him lead with diligence; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
    • Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good.…
  3. James 4:5 ( Link )
    • Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
    • But he gives more grace.

OT

  1. Zephaniah 1:12
    • Search with lamps, who are stagnant in spirit

Taking Shots

I know Antiochian model is so long ago.

We no longer need to preface our call to speak to those that have words of encouragement.

All the prompting one needs these days are :-

  1. Political motive
  2. Bones to pick with someone else ministry
  3. A lifestyle that we disagree with and the bible has given us enough cover
  4. Saw something on TV
  5. Not enough sleep

When we preach on the things mentioned above, we are already receiving our just reward.

Preaching for and to men.

Sometimes

Sometimes I think the reasons why our churches are empty is that we have locked people in.

We have counted who we will like counted and made sure the iffies are not let in.

Somewhere out there the good Lord is out there offering umbrellas to those who need it.

And, searching for lost souls.

While we get on TV and preach against Social Gospel.

SMH wondering which spirit gave us authority to preach against feeding the needy.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

In Closing

Two thousand years later, Jesus’ words continue to confound us

beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod (Mark 8:14–15)

Do not exceed what is written ( 1st Corinthians 4:6 )

1st Corinthians 4:6

Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.

Pretext

Here is the pretext :-

1 Corinthians 10:16
Link ( KJV )

  • Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
  • For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
  • Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
  • Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
  • I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
  • Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
  • And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

Reading

Let us read into the pretext a bit.

Paul is making a point of saying the following :-

  1. Uniformity in teaching is paramount
  2. What we hear and how we judge those words should reflect the rigor and essentials of the read and preached word
  3. Baptism is unto Jesus and not unto the preacher/teacher
  4. Trying to play the number game via baptismal should likely not be a motivation

In Closing

I really like Matthew Henry’s commentary on Acts 2:42-47 …
Link

2:42-47 In these verses we have the history of the truly primitive church, of the first days of it; its state of infancy indeed, but, like that, the state of its greatest innocence. They kept close to holy ordinances, and abounded in piety and devotion; for Christianity, when admitted in the power of it, will dispose the soul to communion with God in all those ways wherein he has appointed us to meet him, and has promised to meet us. The greatness of the event raised them above the world, and the Holy Ghost filled them with such love, as made every one to be to another as to himself, and so made all things common, not by destroying property, but doing away selfishness, and causing charity. And God who moved them to it, knew that they were quickly to be driven from their possessions in Judea. The Lord, from day to day, inclined the hearts of more to embrace the gospel; not merely professors, but such as were actually brought into a state of acceptance with God, being made partakers of regenerating grace. Those whom God has designed for eternal salvation, shall be effectually brought to Christ, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of his glory.

God’s Calling ( Old and New Testament )

Background

I wanted to journal a bit on people of God’s calling.

Bible

  1. Moses
    • Exodus
      • Signs for Moses
        • Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” ( Exodus 4:10 )
        • The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-12 )
        • But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-13 )
        • Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.
          ( Exodus 4:11-14 )
        • You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do. ( Exodus 4:15 )
        • Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites,  and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, and they believed.
And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
        • The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go out of his land.…
          ( Exodus 7:1-2 )
      • The Ten Commandments
        • 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”

20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

  2. Isaiah
    • Isaiah
      • Isaiah 6
        • Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts
        • And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
  3. Ezekiel
    • Ezekiel
      • Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet
        • He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.” As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.
        • He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.  The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’
        • And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
        • And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.
        • You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.
        • But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you.”
  4. Daniel
    • Daniel
      • Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
        • 20 “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;wisdom and power are his.
          21 He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
          and knowledge to the discerning.
          22 He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
          and light dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you
          ( Daniel 2:21-23 )
  5. Amos
    • Amos
      • Then Amaziah said to Amos,“Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.

But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Now then, hear the word of the Lord.

  6. Gideon
    • Judges
      • The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?

And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
        ( Judges 6:17-18 )
      • When Gideon realized that it was the Angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face!”But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”

        • Paul’s Testimony to Agrippa
…About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ ‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied.…

Slavery in Angola

Link

In current day Angola, high levels of child trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, pornography, forced labor, sexual slavery, and other forms of exploitation are reported, in part due to the civil war-caused break down of social structures and traditional security mechanisms active before independence. Angola is a source country for significant number of men, women and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor or sexual exploitation. Children have been trafficked internally and also to Namibia and South Africa for the purposes of sexual exploitation and domestic and commercial labor. The Government of Angola does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.

At present, it is estimated that over one million primary school age children are out of school, the majority of them being girls. There is a strong correlation between women’s education and the increased vulnerability of both mothers and children to a range of life-threatening conditions, including forced labour and prostitution.

Igbo people in the Atlantic slave trade

Link

  1. Ethnic groups were fairly saturated in certain parts of the Americas because of planters preferences for certain African peoples. The Igbo were dispersed to colonies such as Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Barbados, the colonies in the future United States, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago among others. Elements of Igbo culture can still be found in these places. In the United States the Igbo were commonly found in the states of Maryland and Virginia.
  2. The slave trade in this region really started to take off with the appearance of the first Portuguese Ships. There were multiple different ways that people were gathered or taken to be sold off to the Europeans. Most of the slaves that were taken were from the Igbo and the Ibibio peoples, as well as some of the smaller groups in the surrounding area. While some people were taken during raids and wars, it was not the most common way for people to become enslaves, contrary to popular belief. One of the more common ways for people to become enslaved were to be sold off. For example, if a thief was caught in a village, the person would be sold to the slave traders by the elders. The elders would then use the money for the betterment of the community. Another example is for people who were unfaithful to their spouse. Women who had committed adultery could be sold off by their husbands. Another common way to be brought into slavery was to be sold, or “pawned” to settle debts. Children were often used to settle these debts.Kidnapping is also a common way to be forced into slavery. Slave traders would often seek out children who were alone, or small groups of people who were traveling and ambush them. This forced people to have to travel in rather large, armed, groups to protect themselves. Although this is similar to war and raiding, it is at a much smaller scale. Children who were home alone while their parents were working were especially easy targets for the slave traders.

Adults were the most common ones taken, amounting to roughly 85% of the total slave trade from this region, children only made up about 15%. The main reason for this was because adults were already capable of performing hard labor, and had better chances of surviving the grueling journey across the sea.

  3. Haiti
    • Some slaves arriving in Haiti included Igbo people who were considered suicidal and therefore unwanted by plantation owners. According to Adiele Afigbo there is still the Creole saying of Ibos pend’cor’a yo (the Ibo hang themselves).Aspects of Haitian culture that exhibit this can be seen in the Ibo loa, a Haitian loa (or deity) created by the Igbo in the Vodun religion.
  4. United States
    • In the 19th century the state of Virginia received around 37,000 slaves from Calabar of which 30,000 were Igbo according to Douglas B. Chambers. The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia estimates around 38% of captives taken to Virginia were from the Bight of Biafra. Igbo peoples constituted the majority of enslaved Africans in Maryland. Chambers has been quoted saying “My research suggests that perhaps 60 percent of black Americans have at least one Igbo ancestor…”

“… Making me a product of Survival.” – HomeTeam History

Despite his questioning, he affirms his faith in Christianity, as seen in the penultimate sentence of his work that quotes the prophet Micah: “After all, what makes any event important, unless by its observation we become better and wiser, and learn ‘to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before God?'” – Olaudah Equiano ( Link )

    • For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.

And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.…
