Provocation & Correction

1. Ephesians

     • And you, fathers, provoke not your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and correction of the Lord.
2. Colossians
   • Colossians 3:21 – Children Households ( Link )
     • Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not become discouraged.

 

Straight Forwardness

1. Hebrews
   • Hebrews 12:13 – God Disciplines His Sons ( Link )
     • ¹² Therefore strengthen your limp hands and weak knees.
       ¹³ Make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
       ¹⁴ Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

Mercy

1. Jude
   • Jude 1:22 – A Call to Persevere ( Link )
     • ²⁰ But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
       ²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.
       ²² And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;
       ²³ save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.

 

Old Testament

God’s Promise

1. Genesis
   • Genesis 18:19 – Abraham Begs for Sodom ( Link )
     • ¹⁸ Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed.
       ¹⁹ For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.
2. 2nd Samuel
   • 2nd Samuel 7:18-29 – David’s Prayer of Thanksgiving ( Link )
     • ¹⁹ And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, You have also spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. Is this Your custom with man, O Lord GOD?
       ²⁰ What more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD.
       ²¹ For the sake of Your word and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed it to Your servant.

 

God’s Rekindling

1. Genesis
   • Genesis 31:13-16 – Jacob Flees from Laban ( Link )
     • ¹³ I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and made a solemn vow to Me.  Now get up and leave this land at once, and return to your native land.
       ¹⁴ And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house?
       ¹⁵ Are we not reckoned by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and has also entirely consumed our purchase price.
       ¹⁶ Surely all the wealth which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and our children; now then, do whatever God has said to you.”

 

Encourage

In Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21, Paul speaks on tempered correction.

In Hebrews 12, we are encouraged to carry ourselves constructively, truthfully, peaceably, and holy.

Jude carries the light with his teaching on faith, prayers, mercy, and snatching souls from everlasting fire.

In Genesis, we are mindful of Abraham’s plea to God on Sodom’s behalf.

A demonstration that God’s original and final intent is to gather men and women from all nations onto himself.

A gathering principled on righteousness and justice.

God’s foreknowledge of human suffering and shortcoming, leads him to sovereignly seek out a worthy intercessor.

In 2nd Samuel, David is touched with God’s care of his Word and Heart.
