Our Lady of Fátima:- Consecration of a Nation

Background

This is another tough subject matter.

Actually, very tough.

May God cover each of our heads.

Especially, as we place ourselves and lives in his service.

And, his service alone.

Private Versus Public Revelation

Categorized as private revelation

The teaching of the Roman Catholic Church distinguishes between “public Revelation” and “private revelations”. The term “public Revelation” finds its literary expression in the Bible.

Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.

In a meeting with Cardinal Angelo Sodano regarding the issue, Sister Lucia pointed out that she had received the vision but not its interpretation. Accordingly, members of the Catholic Church are further instructed that Marian visions or apparitions do not take part in the “Deposit of Faith” or core doctrine, and are not required for religious belief if undesired.

EWTN, an American television channel that features Catholic programming, takes the position that such Marian apparitions are subjective to the belief of free will and rendered as optional, not compulsory to religious faith.

Consecration of Russia

According to Sister Lúcia, the Virgin Mary requested the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart on several occasions.

Lúcia lived in Spain from 1925 to 1946, during the time of the Second Spanish Republic and the Spanish Civil War. Her first mention of the Blessed Virgin’s request for the consecration of Russia is in the autumn of 1929. In 1929 Lúcia Santos was a novice at the Sisters of St. Dorothy convent in Tuy, Spain. Lúcia reported that on the night of 13 June 1929, while she was praying in a chapel, she experienced a vision in which the Blessed Virgin said that it was God’s will that the Pope, in union with all the Bishops of the world, consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Sister Lúcia reported this to her confessor who asked her to write it down.

In two letters she sent in May 1930 to Fr. Gonçalves, her confessor, Lúcia linked the consecration of Russia with the Devotion of the Five First Saturdays, which she had first discussed in the context of the apparitions she had purportedly experienced previously as a postulant at Pontevedra in 1925. (The Church has issued no decision regarding the reported visions at either Pontevedra or Tuy.

In August 1941, Sister Lúcia wrote her third memoir in which she described the apparition of 13 July 1917. She said that the Virgin told them:-

“God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The [First World] war is going to end; if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the communion of reparation on the first Saturday’s. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

Objections by Russian Orthodox Christians

Orthodox Christians often see the Fátima consecration in the light of the history of Latin-Orthodox religious conflict going back a thousand years. They tend to interpret the Fátima consecration as an encroachment by Latin Christianity on Orthodox territory while Catholics tend to see the matter as followers of Christ vs. atheistic Communism. Orthodox Christians, including those of the Russian Orthodox Church object to the concept of the Consecration of Russia for two reasons:

Russia was already Christian at the time of the alleged Fátima apparitions and had a long history of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary (as Theotokos).

The belief of implicit proselytism of Russian Orthodox Christians to the Catholic Faith. Orthodox Christians thus tend to understand the phrase “Russia will be converted” as implying conversion from Orthodox Christianity to Roman Catholicism and acceptance of papal infallibility and universal supreme jurisdiction.

Some Catholics who support the position of the Catholic Church claim that the apparitions at Fátima took place after the February Revolution of 1917 that deposed Tsar Nicholas II from power and the April 16 return of Vladimir Lenin to Russia.

In this regard, they assert that Russia was already in the midst of revolution and facing a renewed threat from Bolshevism when prayers for Russia were first requested by the apparitions on 13 May 1917. They argue that this timing of the apparition and the Miracle of the Sun suggests that the consecration refers to the threat that Russia faced from atheist beliefs and Russian Communism.

Specific request

The three children Lucy, Francisco, and Jacinta said that in the apparition on June 17, 1917, the Virgin said to them:

I shall come to ask for the Consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart. If people attend to my requests, Russia will be converted and the world will have peace.”

They said that on July 13, 1917, the Virgin told them:

God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart…. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

Three conditions

Sr. Lucy reported that the Virgin of Fatima appeared to her again on June 13, 1929, and said:

This is the moment when God asks

The Holy Father to make,

  1. in union with all the bishops of the world,
  2. the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart.

He promises to save it by that means. So many are the souls which the justice of God condemns for sins committed against me that I come to ask for reparation.
Sacrifice yourself for this intention and pray.”

Threat

And Sr. Lucy added:

“Later on, through intimate communication, Our Lord said:

They have not chosen to heed my request… As the King of France, they will regret it and then will do it, but it will be too late. Russia will already have spread her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions against the Church, the Holy Father will have much to suffer.’”

Sr. Lucy asked our Lord why He would not convert Russia without the solemn public consecration of that nation specifically. Jesus answered:

Because I want My whole Church to acknowledge that consecration as a triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, so that it may extend its homage later on, and put the devout devotion to this Immaculate Heart beside the devotion to My Sacred Heart.”

Response

In response, Popes Pius XII (1942), John Paul II (1984), and Francis (2013) consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart, with Pius XII also specifically consecrating “the peoples of Russia” in 1952.

Has Consecration been completed?

However one can dispute that a valid consecration of Russia, fulfilling the requirements of the apparition at Tuy, has been carried out since the consecration has never been performed in union with all the Catholic bishops of the world as was requested and that the specific mandate “Consecration of Russia” is not expressed verbatim in the wording.

Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa, from Balazar, was a Portuguese mystic who reported many private apparitions, messages and prophecies received directly from Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

In June 1938, based on the request of her spiritual director, Father Mariano Pinho, several bishops from Portugal wrote to Pope Pius XI, asking him to consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In June 1938, Father Mariano Pinho conducted a retreat at Fátima, Portugal, for the Portuguese bishops, at the end of which the bishops forwarded their own request to Pius XI for the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This request was renewed several times.

At that time, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) was the secretary of the state of the Vatican.

On October 31, 1942, Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, joined by the bishops of Portugal, gathered at the Cathedral in Lisbon. Pius spoke by radio, in Portuguese, to an audience of thousands of pilgrims who had come to Fatima to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady.

At that time, German troops under General Rommel had conquered strategic parts of North Africa while advancing towards the Suez Canal, and in Russia fighting continued against an expanding German invasion. On October 31, 1942, Pius XII called for a prayer crusade to Mary the Queen of Peace and stated that only her intercession could save the situation. He then dedicated the whole human race to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He renewed the consecration again on December 8, 1942.

The consecration is noteworthy because it contains a specific reference to military victory.

Peace in truth, justice, and the charity of Christ. Give them peace of the arms and peace of mind he asked from the “Conqueress in God’s battlefields”.

Supporters of Pope Pius and his Marian views point out that indeed the battlefield situation improved markedly for the Allies. Shortly afterward, in the battle of El Alamein, British forces achieved a major breakthrough. According to Winston Churchill, not known as a Marian devotee, one can almost say, before El Alamein, we did not have a single victory, and after not a single defeat.  In the Pacific, the Japanese defenders were decisively beaten during the Guadalcanal Campaign, as part of the larger land and sea battles in the Solomon Islands Campaign, within a few days after the consecration. The downfall of Stalingrad began a few days later as well with the encirclement on November 19, 1942. Stalingrad surrendered on the Marian feast day, February 2, 1943.

This view is not shared by everyone but is popular among Marian devotees of Pope Pius XII.

The Act of Consecration

Queen of the Holy Rosary,
Help of the Christians,
Refuge of the human race,
Conqueress in God’s battlefields,
To You and to Your Immaculate Heart
In this tragic hour of human history
We entrust and consecrate ourselves,
And the Holy Church.
She is the Mystical Body of Your Jesus,
Suffering and bleeding in so many parts
And tormented in so many ways,
We consecrate to You the whole world torn by bitter strife
And consumed by the fire of hatred
The victim of its own wickedness.
Look with compassion to all material and moral destruction
To the suffering and fears of fathers and mothers
Of husbands and wives, of brother and sisters and innocent children.
Look at the many lives cut down in the flower of youth
So many bodies torn to pieces in brutal slaughter
So many souls tortured and troubled
And in danger of being lost eternally.
Oh, Mother of Mercy, obtain peace for us from God!
Obtain especially those graces, which can convert human hearts quickly.
Those graces, which can prepare, establish and insure peace.
Queen of Peace, pray for us;
Give the world at war the peace for which all are longing,
Peace in Truth, Justice and the Charity of Christ.
Give them peace of the arms and peace of mind,
That in tranquillity and order
The Kingdom of God may expand.
Grant Your protection to infidels
And to those still walking in the shadow of death;
Give them peace and permit that the sun of truth may raise upon them;
And that together with us
They may repeat before the Only Saviour of the World:
Glory to God in the highest
And peace on earth among men of good will (Lk2.14)
Give peace to the people separated by error and schism,
Particularly those, who have special devotion to You
And among whom there was no home,
Where Your venerable Icon was not honoured,
Though at present it may be hidden
In the hope for better days.
Bring them back to the One Fold of Christ,
Under the One True Shepherd.
Obtain peace and complete liberty for the Holy Church of God,
Check the spreading flood of neo-paganism,
Arouse within the faithful love of purity
The practice of Christian life and apostolic zeal,
So that the people who serve God,
May increase in merit and number.
All of humanity were once consecrated to the Heart of Your Son.
All our hopes rest in Him, Who is in all times
Sign and pledge of victory and salvation.
Forever we consecrate ourselves to You
And to Your Immaculate Heart,
Oh, Mother and Queen of the World!
May Your love and patronage hasten the victory of the Kingdom of God,
May all nations, at peace with each other and with God, proclaim You Blessed
And sing with You from one end of the earth to the other,
The eternal Magnificat of glory, love and gratitude
To the Heart of Jesus, in which alone,
They can find Truth, Life and Peace
