Scripture

Watch Your Mouth (James 3:1-12)

  1. James
    • James 3:1 – Taming the Tongue ( Link )
      • Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
    • James 3:6 – Taming the Tongue ( Link )
      • The tongue is set on fire by hell
    • James 3:1-12 – The Tongue Is a Fire  ( Link )
      • Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.
      • For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.
      • Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.
      • Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.
      • So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.
      • See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
      • And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
      • For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.
      • But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.
      • With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;
      • from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
      • Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?
      • Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.
  2. 1st John
    • 1st  John 4:20 – Love Comes From God ( Link )
      • …We love because He first loved us.
      • If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar.
      • For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
      • And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well.…
  3. Matthew
    • Matthew 12:34 – Good and Bad Fruit ( Link )
      • Make a tree good and its fruit will be good or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.
      • You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good?
      • For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
      • The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure, and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.…

Teaching

Watch Your Mouth (James 3:1-12)

  1. The Tongue is inconsistent
    • James 3:9
      • With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God
        • With it, we bless our Lord and Father
        • And, with it, we curse our neighbors
  2. Revelation
    • Our words reveal what our hearts hide
    • What we think about our neighbors reveal what we actually believe about God
    • Perhaps we have forgotten that our speech towards him and each other are both forms of worship
    • That is it is an inconsistent thing to sing “I love you, Lord”, and then to say “I hate you neighbor”
    • But, then we do not see our
      • undue criticism
      • Slander
      • Gossip
      • And, reveling as hate
    • But, hate is simply to love one comparatively less to another
    • Our issue is not controlling the tongue, but more so looking at our hearts
    • Scripture says out of the abundance of the hearts, the mouth speaks
  3. Matching Our words and worship
    • If you really want to know what your worship looks like, pay attention to what words come from your heart
    • In closing, I want to suggest to you, three simple things and they are
      • To be Honest
      • To Behold
      • And, to be filled
    • Honest
      • Confess how we have used our words to teat down instead of building up
      • Especially the Church, that is, the people in this room
      • Sitting in these seats
      • We have had a whole lot to say over the last year
      • And, where there has been beautiful God Honoring speech, there has been even more destructive languages
      • We need to repent for what we have said online to our friends, our family, our co-workers that have been death instead of life
      • But, know this is in the same way that words can hurt, they can also heal
      • Listen to Proverbs 12:18 ( Loving Discipline and Knowledge ) [ Link ]
        • …He who speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
        • Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
        • Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.…
    • Behold
      • Behold Jesus at the Temple ( Luke 2:47 ) [ Link ]
        • …Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
        • And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.
      • This tells you that Jesus used wise words
      • Temptation in the Wilderness
        • When driven into the wilderness to be tempted one of the temptations is to command stones into bread
        • The ask is that Jesus should use his divine powers to feed his personal needs
        • But, rather than use his own personal words, Jesus opted to use God’s words
      • Demon-Possessed Man
        • Jesus calls the demons out
          • Luke 4:36 – Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit ( Link )
            • …But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him.
            • All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power, He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!
            • And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region.…
      • Jesus uses liberating words
      • Got in a Sea Storm
        • While Jesus was asleep, the wind and the waves started to break it
        • Filling the boat with water

        • … The Burden of the cross to bear
        • It is not just a burden of harm done
        • But, of words said, as well
        • Words that are
          • Hateful
          • Racist

      • The tongue of fire came down from Heaven to infill his people
      • They were filled with the Holy Spirit
      • The Holy Spirit allows them to speak in various languages
      • We may not need another language understanding the limitations that we have taming the one we already have
      • But, we do not help in helping us so that when we open up our mouth what comes out is Glory
      • Though the tongue cannot be tamed by Human Nature, the Holy Ghost can help tame it
