Mental Health & NBA

Background

It is good to see athletes talk a bit more openly about their personal health and disposition.

Acknowledge community issues.

And, hopefully, help others.

Prior to the 2018 NBA All-Star game, Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan opened up to his 600,000 Twitter followers with a seven-word tweet about his struggles with mental illness:-

This depression get the best of me…

In the following days, he completed an interview for a story published in The Toronto Star detailing his lifelong battle with anxiety and depression, hoping that his willingness to share might help others feel less alone.

“It’s nothing I’m against or ashamed of,” he told the publication. “Now, at my age, I understand how many people go through it. Even if it’s just somebody can look at it like, ‘He goes through it and he’s still out there being successful and doing this,’ I’m OK with that.”

DeRozan has continued to give interviews and discuss his mental health in addition to speaking about the unseen mental health issues professional athletes cope with across all sports. However, his initial tweet—and ensuing media attention—has been seen as pivotal in sparking the conversation that has altered the trajectory of how the NBA and NBPA have decided to approach the topic over the last year.

…off-court tragedies that inevitably affect Lillard’s mental health:

“His emotions had been worn thin because, in the past 18 months, it seemed like he had lived a lifetime. In 2020, he was the first to discover the dead body of his cousin and personal chef. An aunt died from cancer. A family friend died of COVID-19. And in the early months of 2021, a cousin was killed in West Oakland.

“And then last Thursday, the day before the Lakers game, Lillard learned of the shooting deaths of two people in his inner circle. One was a cousin close enough to Lillard to be at his family’s Thanksgiving dinner in Portland in November. The other was like family — the best friend of perhaps his closest cousin, who was among the first family members to move to Portland when Lillard was drafted by the Trail Blazers in 2012.”

        • Earlier this year, two gifted NBA stars, Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers and DeMar DeRozan of the San Antonio Spurs, each publicly discussed their challenges with mental and emotional well-being. Their honesty started a national conversation about breaking through the stigma and fear of openly discussing mental health issues in professional sports. In this very personal conversation, the superstar athletes share their experiences with anxiety, depression, and loneliness. What they reveal about mental health actually reveals much about their mental strength.
