God’s Calling ( Old and New Testament )

Background

I wanted to journal a bit on people of God’s calling.

Bible

  1. Moses
    • Exodus
      • Signs for Moses
        • Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” ( Exodus 4:10 )
        • The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-12 )
        • But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
          ( Exodus 4:11-13 )
        • Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.
          ( Exodus 4:11-14 )
        • You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do. ( Exodus 4:15 )
        • Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites,  and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, and they believed.
And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
        • The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go out of his land.…
          ( Exodus 7:1-2 )
      • The Ten Commandments
        • 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”

20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

  2. Isaiah
    • Isaiah
      • Isaiah 6
        • Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts
        • And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
  3. Ezekiel
    • Ezekiel
      • Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet
        • He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.” As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.
        • He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.  The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’
        • And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
        • And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.
        • You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.
        • But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you.”

He gives wisdom to the wise
          and knowledge to the discerning.
          22 He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
          and light dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you

      • Then Amaziah said to Amos,“Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. ( Judges 6:17-18 )
      • When Gideon realized that it was the Angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the Angel of the LORD face to face!”But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid, for you will not die.”

We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ ‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied.…
