SQL Server – Wait Stats – “PREEMPTIVE_OS_PIPEOPS”

Background

Reviewing Wait Stats is an important tool in monitoring SQL Server in general and also particular processes.

Explanation

We have issued a command through xp_cmdshell.

The command payload is to copy last night’s backup file from Production to QA.

Insight

  1. Login Name
    • NT AUTHORITY\Network Service
      • SQL Server Agent Account
  2. CPU
    • Using quite a bit of CPU
  3. Reads/Writes/Physical Reads
    • Negligible
      • OS is handling copy command
      • And, actual usage not account to SQL Server
