Hadoop on Windows

About year ago while heading to lunch, a co-worker quipped to my manager that Daniel will use any OS as long as it is Microsoft.

And, I just smiled and have being silently smiling since then.

So if you will use any OS as long as it is Microsoft, but you are getting a bit jealous of all the talk about BigData, Hadoop (HDFS, MapReduce, and HBase), read on …

Microsoft’s product branding for Hadoop is currently known as HDInsight.  And, it is available @ Microsoft BigData ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/solutions-technologies/business-intelligence/big-data.aspx )

If your working computer has Internet Access and that is the computer that you will like to install it on, then soldier to http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appid=HDINSIGHT-PREVIEW.

On the other hand, if you will like to download and later install it, then happily read along:

Offline HDInsight Installation:

The thread follows an online conversation between Ray Jethro (Questionnaire) and Microsoft’s Bradsa.  And, I am thinking who names their son, Bradsa.

In summary, download Webpicmd from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=233753 and get an offline installer via:

webpicmd /offline /products:HDINSIGHT-PREVIEW /path:<destination>

To get good instructions per how to use webpicmd, soldier to

Chris Sfanos – Web Platform Installer v4 command line (WebPICMD.exe) Preview Release

As always, Microsoft’s Scott Hanselman is mentioned.

And, as always, Scott talks about his wife.  And, as my younger brother will say, this guy puts everyman to shame.

Just me here, Steve Ballmer always talks about developers this Developer that.  But, why make it so hard to download an installer.  I am sure Microsoft’s see it as a step forward, but does it not hurt Network Bandwidth to have people hit their servers every time to download a piece of free software that you just installed on another computer minutes ago.
