VirtualDub – Merging AVI Files – Error Message – Couldn’t locate decompressor for format ‘XVID’ (unknown)
Working in the Production side of the house, Friday Night is not always a down time. But, as I have some house work to do tomorrow, I can use a bit of rest tonight.
Have some home made video to watch – Unfortunately, they are ‘housed’ in little AVI files. So brought out the old reliable Virtual DUB to bring them together.
But, no quick work this time.
Error Landed me @:
Error Header
Couldn’t locate decompressor for format ‘XVID’ (unknown)
Error Message
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
So what to do:
- Look around for XVID Codecs
- Found one in “Windows 7 Codec”. It is available @ http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10965840.html?part=dl-10053955&subj=dl&tag=button
Downloaded and Installed it. And restarted Virtual DUB.
BTW, the OS is MS Windows 2012. As a server product, it does not appear that Windows Media Player is pre-installed and probably very little Codecs are pre-installed.
Have being using VideoLan (VLC) to play movies. And, so did not notice the missing Media Player and Codecs till now. BTW, VLC has its own built-in codecs.
Thanks for this entry. I had the exact same problem (XVID+Windows Server 2012). Your post helped me fix it!
