Microsoft – OLE DB Providers – Creating UDL File – Error – Properties you entered cannot be saved because the Data Link file is inacccessible

Trying to create a 32-bit OLE-DB UDL File:

  1. Launch a command prompt
  2. Enter the command pasted below

Syntax :-


C:\Windows\syswow64\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll",OpenDSLFile 

Sample :-


C:\Windows\syswow64\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll",OpenDSLFile e:\XE.udl

 

Error

Error Title :-

Microsoft Data Link

Error Message :-

Properties you entered cannot be saved because the Data Link file is inaccessible. Ensure that the hard drive or network share is still available

 

Error Message ( Interpretation )

The error message is a bit in-direct.  And, a more helpful message will be “Please pre-create the file” will likely suffice.

Fix

There are a couple of ways to create an empty file

  1. Create the file using Windows Explorer
  2. Create the file from the OS Shell using copy con


Syntax :-


copy con [filename]


Sample :-

copy con xe.udl
