MS SQL Server – Read OS Version

Recently we had a need to determine the base OS Version that MS SQL Server Instances were running on:

There a few ways to get this information :-

Using the registry

xp_regread

exec master..xp_regread
      'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
    , 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion'
    , 'ProductName'

exec master..xp_regread
      'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'
    , 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion'
    , 'CSDVersion'

System Stored Procedure

xp_MSver
